As Biogas generally called, are all gases which result from microbial degradation of organic matters under anoxic conditions (under exclusion of oxygen). In addition to the classical biogas, there is also digester gas from sewage treatment plants as well as landfill gas, which results from fermentation of solid biomass/bio-waste, food leftovers, organic fertilizers, plant remains and energy crops.
Biogas can be used for energy in different ways, i.e. for heat production and/or for electrical power generation. All fermentation gases improve the ecological balance and today they have already a significant portion on the production of electricity.
To keep all processes during fermentation continuously at a high degree, it is necessary to have the knowledge about the process and the produced biogas. Therefore a precise and reliable measurement of biogas quantity (flow) and quality (analysis) is particularly important even for Monitoring projects. Thus process problems can already be recognized and intervened in the process at the early stages.
There are special challenges on the sensor systems and its expected operation time, since fermentation gas is a damp and corrosive gas by its components. Furthermore, the concentrations of these components are not constant. They change depending on the kind of substrates and/or process and/or process conditions. Despite varying gas composition, only with a combination of the gas flow measurement and analysis, an exact and reliable regulation to the mass of gas is possible.
COMBIMASS® Biogas Flow Meter
A precondition for a usable and precise biogas flow measurement is the determination of the gas mass flow not measured under operation conditions but under standard conditions.
The COMBIMASS® eco bio+ type uses the thermal dispersion principle and measures the gas mass flow directly at standard pressure and standard temperature. Only the dampness portion must be compensated in order to determine the mass flow under standard conditions according to DIN 1343 (0°C, 1013 kPa, 0% relative dampness).
But all other volumetric flow measuring systems need at least 3 different sensors to do this!

COMBIMASS® Biogas Analysis
The COMBIMASS gas analyzer systems are extremely rugged, maintenance-free and reliable. All common requirements of the analysis of digester gas, landfill gas and biogas from anaerobic digestion plants are fulfilled.
Various customized gas cells can be installed into the compact portable analyzer with EX-permission.
This mobile equipment can be converted into a high-quality gas analysis station by putting into the stationary docking station without losing the flexibility of its mobility. All the usual signal interfaces of data transfer to the main control system can be supplied. With test gas connectivity function availa-ble, the measuring cells in the mobile analyzer can be kept precise easily by using the calibration menu.
Biogas Flow Meter for Monitoring/CDM-projects
The COMBIMASS biogas flow meter, based on its technology, is very well suited for the proof of an-nual biogas production. They measure at low gas speeds very precisely – this is one of the main ad-vantages compared to other technologies.
Pressure and temperature compensation is not necessary.
The dampness portion can be eliminated in the internal electronic sensor head based on the current gas temperature. So without further measuring techniques, the dry biogas flow is then measured at standard conditions.
